ISDS Website FAQs
The new ISDS website is designed to allow you to engage more easily with your fellow public health professionals and gain access to up-to-date curated content that are relevant to public health surveillance. There are a number of changes between this site and our former websites. Our FAQs will address some of your questions. And if you don't see the answer to your questions here, please drop a note to Mark Krumm with your question.
Should I "Join" this website? Who is allowed to join?
Yes! If you are a public health professional, please join the website. There are two categories, Guests and ISDS Members. Most current ISDS members have a profile created for them and should have received an email with a temporary user name and password. If you think you are a member and did not see your email, please contact Mark Krumm. If you are not a member, please consider membership to support the work of the Society, or join as a Guest.
Currently Guests have the same access to content on the website as ISDS Members. (This may change in the future as more features and content are added to the site.)
What happens to my information when I register?
We ask for a bare minimum of information. We need your name and email, and we ask for your areas of professional interest and expertise. We never share your email and name with anyone outside of ISDS. As for your interest and expertise, those help us understand our audience. They may help you connect with colleagues with similar interests and challenges. We ask other questions too, but most are optional, you may response if you wish.
What's happening to the old Forums?
Our forums have been hosted on a discussion forum that was not integrated into the website. Those forums will still be live for a short while, but we invite all persons to participate in the Groups that offer similar discussion features, but are integrated into this website. As with our former discussion forums, you must be registered and signed in to the website to view or contribute to a discussion. Read more about the different kinds of groups on the About Groups page.
How do I learn about events like webinars, new forum activity and the annual conference?
When you register on the site, we'll be able to send you information about all of ISDS's activities. You also have some control over the kinds of messages you receive in your profile settings.
What is Social Link? Why do I want it? When can I get it?
Social Link is a mobile app that allows you to remain connected with ISDS from your smartphone or tablet. Our new website is "responsive" design, meaning it adapts for use on your devices, but Social Link allows you to receive and send notices about activities on the site. With Social Link, you can stay current with group conversations, calendars and receive updates right to your phone. Social Link is scheduled for introduction in late March. And, of course, you'll hear about it first if you are registered for the site.
I am uploading a file. What file extensions are allowed?
AZW, EPUB, MOBI, SCE, SCI and XCOS , 7z, avi, asc, bmp, css, csv, doc, docx, dot, eps, flv, gif, gzip, ics, jpeg, jpg, js, mdb, mov, mp3, mp4, mpeg, mpg, notebook, pdf, png, ppt, pptm, pptx, pps, ppsx, psd, pub, qt, rar, rss, rtf, swf, tif, tiff, txt, wav, wma, wmv, wpd, xls, xlsx, xml, xspf and zip
Unfortunately, our AMS service does not allow users to upload executable code due to security concerns. As a workaround, we recommend users save their code (.r, .sas, etc.) as a .txt or .rtf file before uploading it onto their group page.
My Question Wasn't Addressed Here. What do I do?
We'll be happy to help. Send Mark Krumm an email, we'll answer your question, and perhaps add it here to our FAQs.
