Conference Workshops

New for 2018! All workshops are included in the standard registration and are open to all, and they'll be offered every day of the conference from January 31st through February 2nd.

Here's are the current offerings for 2018

Meeting Facilitation Skills Workshop

Led by experts from PHII, this four hour workshop will give you valuable skills necessary to effective lead meetings. Four hours. January 31st

Strategies for Improving Grant and Scientific Writing

Led by Brian E. Dixon, MPA, PhD, FHIMSS. Dr. Dixon has an extensive background in grant writing as well as scientific writing. Join him to learn techniques and strategies to improve your writing success. Two hours.

Description: Effectively communicating ideas in a grant proposal or scientific report is critical to success in the field of public health, yet writing grants and reports is challenging for many. This workshop will share strategies that enable individuals to improve their writing skills. The workshop focuses on strategies targeting scientific grants and reports, including peer-reviewed abstracts as well as journal articles. Attendees at all writing skill levels should take away ideas from this workshop.

ESSENCE Training, Introduction and Intermediate

Led by Wayne Loschen, MS, who has been involved in the disease surveillance domain as the technical lead for the ESSENCE system at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Two two-hour sessions. Time TBD.

Opioid Surveillance Workshops

Currently planned as two sessions, one led by CDC experts and another from State/local PH experts to give two perspectives and approaches to analyzing and understanding one of the most complicated and urgent issues that practitioners face today. Two two-hour sessions. Date TBD.

Disaster Surveillance Workshop

Learn techniques and tools used in surveillance efforts during and after natural disasters. Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have demonstrated the complexity and depth of the affects of serious storms. Leaders in this workshop will be able to speak of their experiences related to these recent events. Three hours. Day TBD.

Introduction to R for Public Health

Two hours. Day TBD.

Intermediate R: Practical Tools for the R User
